About the Doctor

So Dave grew up in the Big Apple. His older sister Helene
picked on him and Dave in turn picked on his younger brother Michael. The
rule in the house was if one cried, we all cried. And this rule was enforced
judiciously by Franklin, especially after Shirley would tell the children
"just wait until your father gets home!!!" Dave
managed to survive his childhood, and by the time he finished high school he
was helping his father Franklin with his New York Hot Dog business. Frank
had a fleet of trucks that delivered frankfurters to hot dog vendors all
over New York City. Being a growing teenager, Dave developed a voracious
appetite for New York hot dogs. Hmmmmm, delicious!!!!! |

| Dave's first year of college was at Bucknell University
in Lewisberg, Pennsylvania (Go Bisons!!) On spring break he came to Madison
to visit a friend and ended up transferring to the University of Wisconsin,
Madison (On Wisconsin!!!) to complete his college education. During his time
at the UW he dodged tear gas and National Guardsman during the turbulent
anti-war demonstrations of the late 60's and early 70's (OK, he may have
joined in on some of the demonstrations). He also began to sail with the Hoofers Sailing Club
and developed a lifelong passion for the wind and the water. He graduated in
1972 with a BA degree in Philosophy. |

| After college, Dave had to decide what he
wanted to be when he grew up. The job market for philosophers was bleak in
the early 70's, and he wasn't interested in selling hot dogs (only eating
them!) He didn't know what to do, so he fell back upon his Jewish heritage
which provided him with three basic choices: doctor, lawyer, or rabbi. "My
son the doctor" always had a nice ring to it so he decided to become a
doctor. He moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he attended Wake
Forest University/Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He received his MD degree
in May of 1977. After graduating medical school, Dave entered into the public health service and was assigned to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where he served as a medical officer for three years. He then became an emergency medicine specialist and was one of the first physicians in the United States to complete certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. In 1983 he opened his first emergency care center, MedicEast, in Madison, Wisconsin. This was Madison's first "walk-in" clinic. He also started performing Independent Medical Evaluations and presently continues to provide these services. Seeking to improve his professional credentials, David completed a Masters of Public Health program at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he obtained his MPH degree in May of 1994. He became Board Certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine with a specialty in Occupational Medicine in January of 1995. In 1997 he sold his "walk-in" medical practice and now performs IMEs for a variety of agencies in the Midwest. |

In the meantime, Dave pursued his lifelong musical interests. He is an accomplished pianist and has played professionally in a variety of different venues. He also plays bass clarinet and in 1995 played for the Pope in Rome as a member of the Madison Municipal Concert Band. And of course, let's not forget Dave's first instrument, the accordion. He has been known to show up when least expected as the gypsy accordion player (it's a talent that he expects to carry him through retirement!!) |

| When he is not busy doctoring or playing music or sailing, Dave loves to roller blade and has participated in marathons and fund raising events. He also loves to snowboard and for many years was a Senior Snowboard Patroller at Cascade Mountain, a local ski hill. Dave is actively involved in the lives of his three children, Gillian, Eli and Sarah. When not in Madison, you can find Dave floating around on his sailboat Bel Ami in the Caribbean. | |
